Being located in London, will give you the chance to explore art galleries galore. However, day to day your studies will take place on campus. Discover some of the locations where you will be examining changing historical conceptions of art and the artist, and explore the visual arts in their wider contexts. Please note, access to specific facilities will be dependent on your particular programme/module choices.

Main Entrance

Main entrance

Arriving at the main entrance of the Grade-II listed Richard Hoggart Building you’ll immediately be struck by the history and heritage of the place. This is where you’ll be able to grab a coffee or snack before you start your day, and where you’ll find the Department of Visual Cultures – your home department, and the place to go if you need to visit your personal tutor.

Kingsway Corridor

Kingsway Corridor

Heading to your first seminar of the day, you may well need to use the Kingsway Corridor. This is where several big classrooms are based, but it’s also used as an exhibition space throughout the year. These exhibitions are a chance to learn something new, get inspired or challenged, and consider the visual arts in their wider cultural and political contexts.

College Green

The College Green is a popular place to spend time relaxing and catching up with friends. It’s a lovely spot for lunch as you’ll be surrounded by open space, and it’s also in the heart of the campus so you won’t need to walk far to your next location.

Richard Hoggart Building Studio

Richard Hoggart Building studio

As a history of art student you’ll have a mixture of scheduled learning like lectures and seminars, and also intensive studio work if there’s a fine art practice element to your degree. You will also be expected to undertake a lot of independent study like reading, research and producing essays or project work. This room is close to the Visual Cultures department, and offers a relaxed space for collaborative working.

Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA)

The Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) is our very own public art gallery on campus, bringing exciting contemporary artists to New Cross. Admission to exhibitions is free, and the space – a converted Victorian bathhouse redesigned by Turner Prize winners Assemble – is stunning. A perfect way to end your day at uni.
