As a student in this department, you may have access to radio studios, photography studios, darkrooms and production rooms, as well as access to a range of digital video and audio editing equipment if you are studying on relevant modules. As the degrees include learning theory as well as practice, students also spend time in lectures, seminars, and the library. Please note, access to specific facilities will be dependent on your particular programme/module choices.

Communal area in the Professor Stuart Hall Building

Start your day off right by grabbing a hot drink in our vegan cafe, Peak Street Café, which sells hot and cold food and drinks. This is the newest of our academic buildings, and was named after the prominent sociologist Stuart Hall. It is home to the Department of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies, the Institute of Management (IMS), and the Institute for Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship (ICCE), so many of your lectures and seminars are likely to be here.

Ian Gulland Lecture Theatre

A big part of your university experience will be made up of attending lectures and seminars. The Ian Gulland Lecture Theatre is our largest lecture theatre on campus so it is likely you’ll be spending some time here. Make the most of additional talks and events put on by the Media, Communications and Cultural Studies Department including fantastic guest speakers, these could be a great source of extra knowledge in your specialism.

You’ll be expected to undertake independent study and reading as part of your Media, Communications and Cultural Studies degree, no matter which programme you choose. The Library has plenty of resources to help you make your way through your reading list, there are also Subject Librarians on hand to help with any in-depth queries.

Darkroom

Darkrooms

If you head down to the lower ground floor of the Professor Stuart Hall Building you’ll find the photography darkrooms nestled in the back of the building. Depending on your module choices, you can use these facilities to learn and tweak your own film development techniques. Providing equipment and supplies for both colour, and black and white development, these facilities will allow you to hone your photography skills. There are a range of other specialist facilities available within the department, including edit suites and a radio studio which you may use depending on your module choices for your programme.
